Drywall & Painting
Drywall and paint are the surfaces you live with every day — and they're the surfaces that reveal the quality of every trade that came before them. CMN Construction's drywall and painting work is executed by the same crews who finish our kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, and whole-home projects. We don't subcontract this to whoever is available; we use the people whose work we've verified meets our standard for preparation, application, and finish quality.
For new construction and full remodels, we specify level-5 smooth finish — a full skim coat over the entire drywall surface that produces walls indistinguishable from plaster and that look exceptional under raking light and high-sheen paint. For repair work in existing homes — water damage patches, foundation crack repairs, texture restoration after electrical or plumbing work — we match the existing texture so precisely that the repair is invisible after painting.
For interior and exterior painting, we specify premium materials — Sherwin-Williams Duration, Emerald, or equivalent — and we apply them correctly with thorough surface preparation, not as a rushed final step. In the DFW climate, where UV exposure, summer heat, and humidity stress exterior surfaces, product selection and preparation are as important as the paint itself. Our process, simplified.
Drywall and paint are the surfaces you live with every day. They're also the surfaces that reveal the quality of every trade that came before them — framing that's out of plumb, electrical work that left rough patches, corners that weren't protected during construction. A skilled drywall and paint team turns all of that into smooth, flat, finished walls and ceilings that make a room feel complete. A rushed one leaves evidence of every shortcut.
Drywall and painting — where a remodel becomes a home
Drywall and paint are the surfaces you live with every day. They're also the surfaces that reveal the quality of every trade that came before them — framing that's out of plumb, electrical work that left rough patches, corners that weren't protected during construction. A skilled drywall and paint team turns all of that into smooth, flat, finished walls and ceilings that make a room feel complete. A rushed one leaves evidence of every shortcut.
CMN Construction's drywall and painting work is done by the same crews who finish our kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, and whole-home projects. We don't sub this out to whoever has availability — we use the people whose work we've verified, who meet our standard for preparation, application, and finish quality. In the DFW market, paint quality varies enormously between contractors. We specify premium materials — Sherwin-Williams Duration, Emerald, or equivalent — and we apply them correctly, not as a rushed final step.
Drywall installation and repair — level-5 smooth and texture matching
The drywall finish level matters enormously in how a painted room looks. Level-3 and level-4 finishes — the standard in most DFW production construction — are appropriate for textured walls where the texture obscures tape lines and slight surface variations. Level-5 smooth finish — a full skim coat over the entire drywall surface — produces walls that are indistinguishable from plaster and that look exceptional under raking light and gloss or semi-gloss paint. It's the standard we use for new construction and full renovation projects.
For repair work in existing homes — water damage repairs, nail pops, cracks from foundation movement, patching after electrical or plumbing work — texture matching is the critical skill. North Texas homes have a wide range of existing textures: orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, and in older Dallas and Richardson homes, occasionally genuine sand texture or artisan plaster. We match the existing texture so that repairs are invisible after painting, not merely covered.
Crown molding and trim are the architectural elements that define a room's quality level. Standard builder-grade casing and base molding — the 2¼" colonial profile found in most 1990s and 2000s DFW homes — can be upgraded to more substantial profiles that significantly change how a room reads. We install and paint custom trim packages as part of both kitchen and whole-home renovation projects.
Interior and exterior painting — preparation is 80% of the result
Professional paint application over inadequate preparation produces a result that looks good for six months and degrades for the next five years. CMN Construction's painting process begins with thorough preparation: filling nail holes and minor imperfections, sanding glossy surfaces to promote adhesion, masking floors and adjacent surfaces carefully, and priming bare drywall and repaired areas before topcoat application.
For interior painting in DFW homes, we specify products matched to the use environment. Kitchens and bathrooms get washable, semi-gloss or satin formulations that resist moisture and clean without surface degradation. Living areas get eggshell or satin for a balance of aesthetics and durability. Ceilings get flat white that minimizes light reflection and hides surface variations.
For exterior painting in the DFW climate — where UV exposure, summer heat, and humidity create real material stress — product selection and surface preparation are equally critical. We use 100% acrylic exterior formulations rated for the Texas climate, and we address any wood rot, failing caulk, or substrate issues before applying topcoat. Paint is not a remedy for deferred maintenance; it's a finish coat on properly prepared surfaces.
Drywall and painting as part of a remodel — sequencing matters
In a kitchen or bathroom remodel, drywall and painting happen in a specific sequence that must be coordinated with other trades. Drywall installation follows framing and rough-in inspection. Primer coat happens before cabinetry installation so that cabinet interiors aren't painted over during touch-up. Final paint coat happens after cabinetry, tile, and trim are complete — which means the painters are back at the end of the project for finish work that needs to be clean and precise.
CMN Construction manages this sequencing as part of our integrated project management. Painters aren't scheduled independently — they're part of the project plan, showing up at the right phase with the right product for the current scope. The result is a finished project where the paint looks like the final chapter of a well-organized story, not a rushed afterthought.
